Winning Tips . . . (cont'd.)

Content:

Content is such an important part of your website.  If your content isn't appealing to your visitors, they won't be returning to your site.

It's great if you're able to write your own stories, poems, music, etc., but we realize that everyone doesn't have that talent.  But ..... when you made the decision to build a site, you had an idea in mind.  So now, grow on that idea and keep your site consistent with it.   We come across sites that have so many different topics, we lose track of where we are.

And here again, the music.  If you use music, make sure you have permission to do so, and ALWAYS be sure to provide your visitor with a way to turn it off.  Everybody has a different taste in music.  What you may think is the perfect music for your site, may make your visitors CRINGE when they hear it.

Another area where people get carried away is with animations.  Animations have been proven to cause migraine headaches and seizures in some individuals.  We would prefer that you not use them at all, as they are very distracting.  If you must use them, limit them to no more than two, and please make sure they are relevant to the content/design of your site.

A contact/email link or guest book is also very important to your visitors.  They may have a question to ask you, comments to make, etc.

SPELL-CHECK .... SPELL-CHECK .... SPELL-CHECK!!!  Can we say that any clearer?  We're not all the greatest spellers in the world, but it is very easy to use a spell-checker.  Not checking your spelling is just laziness on the part of the webmaster.  Also .... don't even solely rely on the spell checker.  Have someone proofread your site before you open it to the public.

COPPA:  The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act was enacted to protect children under 13 years of age.   If you operate a commercial Web site or an online service directed to children under 13 that collects personal information from children or if you operate a general audience Web site and have actual knowledge that you are collecting personal information from children, you must comply with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act. Design:
Your design is what your visitors see upon entering the site and is what their first impression is most often based on.  Don't make your visitors view red font on blue or black backgrounds or blind them with a flashing background.   They won't stick around for very long.

Maintain uniformity in your site.  Use the same webset or graphics throughout.  Many web builders get carried away by all the beautiful graphics available and use a different design on each page.  Your visitors easily get lost this way and don't even realize they're still at your site, or worse, that they've left it.

Your site should load reasonably fast.  We live in a fast-paced world where people no longer want to wait for anything.  If you site takes very long to load, your visitors will be long gone.

Navigation:
Your navigation is where visitors sometimes become frustrated and leave your site, because they can't find their way around.  Give your visitors easily accessible menu options they can find without having to search all over the place.

Its nice if your pages aren't extremely long, but sometimes it's necessary to your design.  In cases like this, always provide your visitors with a TOP button to return them to the top of the page.

Your external links should always open in a new window.  If not, you have lost your visitor as soon as they click that link.  They will be gone from your site and probably won't make it back.

Your internal links should open within the same window.  Too many open windows can crash our browsers, and then you've lost your visitor for sure.

These are just a few things that will give you a better chance of winning OUR award.  Remember, these tips are based on OUR criteria and the way WE at Treasures Of The Web™  evaluate your site.
